Differences Between An Electric Actuator And Pneumatic Actuator
Posted in Uncategorised, on May 24, 2022 By Admin
An electric actuator is a device that uses electric energy and converts it into mechanical energy to generate motion. Actuators are part of our daily lives and we use them whether knowingly or unknowingly. The automated door at the entrance of a mall is a fine example of an electric actuator's application.
There are several types of actuators and to understand the requirement, they are majorly segregated into two types:
i) Based on motion — the linear actuator and rotary actuator.
ii) Based on energy source — pneumatic actuator, hydraulic actuator and electric actuator.
Electric actuators and pneumatic actuators are widely used across various industrial sectors due to their efficiency, flexibility and accuracy. However, some features set them apart.
Major differences between the electric actuator and pneumatic actuator
Maintenance:
Many pros and cons revolve around the maintenance of electric and pneumatic actuators. An electric actuator is susceptible to shock, spark and liquid, unlike its counterpart. However, when it comes to longevity and safety hazards, the maintenance of an electric actuator is much easier than pneumatic.
Fail-safe option:
A fail-safe option is a common feature on actuators with valves and is tasked to prevent any sort of malfunctioning upon power failure. While pneumatic actuators come with a fail-safe option, electric actuators do not.
Noise:
Pneumatic actuators require an air compressor to pump air into the system. This process results in the generation of loud noise. On the other hand, electric actuators make minimal to no noise and facilitate a noiseless environment.
Performance under extreme conditions:
Due to the presence of electric components, an electric actuator is relatively less durable. It can function smoothly in temperatures ranging from -40 and 150°F. Alternatively, pneumatic actuators can easily bear temperatures between -40 to 250°F and come with high saturation.
