Brief Overview Of Direct Fired Process Heater

Many industrial processes use a variety of engineering equipment such as liquid ring pumps, centrifugal blowers, actuators, heat exchangers, and even process heaters. Coming to the latter, several industries use either direct-fired or process bath heaters. The working of the former and its two main varieties will be explained below.
Working of direct fired process heater
A direct-fired process heater is a type of industrial equipment that uses natural gas, propane, or other combustible fuels to heat air or other gases. The heat produced by the combustion of these fuels is then transferred to the desired process stream. There are two main types of direct-fired process heaters: convection heaters and radiant-convective heaters.
Convection Heaters
Convection heaters work by circulating the hot gases produced by the combustion process through a set of coils or tubes. These coils or tubes are typically made from stainless steel or another type of heat-resistant material. The heat transfer from the hot gases to the process stream occurs through convection, which is the process of moving hot fluids through and around colder ones.
Radiant-Convective Heaters
Radiant-convective heaters, on the other hand, transfer heat to the process stream through a combination of radiation and convection. In these types of heaters, the hot gases produced by the combustion process are directed towards a refractory-lined chamber containing both a bare-tubed radiant section and a finned convection section. The heat from the hot gases is then transferred to the process stream through both radiation and convection.
Direct-fired process heaters are typically used in applications where high temperatures are required, such as in petrochemical plants or refinery operations. They are also often used in applications where there is a need for quick heating or cooling, such as in food processing facilities.
