3 Major Types of Valves
Posted in Uncategorised, on April 14, 2022 By Admin
In many engineering applications, it is necessary to control the flow of a certain fluid. This is where a valve comes into the picture, making it an integral part of many operations. Often accompanied by a pneumatic, hydraulic or electric actuator, these devices are fundamental for the optimal performance of any equipment. But how does a valve function exactly? And what are the different types of valves available in the market today? The answers to these questions will be explained below in detail.
What is a valve?
In essence, a valve is a mechanical switch that can increase, decrease or stop the flow of a liquid or gaseous medium altogether in a pipe or other similar assembly. Basically, they are used to control the rate of flow of a fluid, and in order to change the positioning of the valve according to external stimuli, actuators are used.
What are the different types of valves?
Although a valve can be classified by many different criteria, here’s a look at 3 of the most common types of valves on the basis of design.
Ball Valve
A ball valve is a hollow, metallic sphere that fits inside a pipe or an orifice. In the off position, it is stationary, thereby blocking the flow of fluids. When the flow is required to start, the valve is simply rotated by about 90 degrees to facilitate this activity.
Butterfly Valve
Another popular iteration of the valve, this butterfly version is shaped like a disc and covers the entirety of a pipe, restricting the flow of fluid. To allow the flow, the valve is simply rotated sideways, and the flow can be increased or decreased according to the tilt of this disc. Quite efficient in operation, butterfly valves are best suited for compact spaces.
Globe Valve
This valve rather functions as a screw, and by turning the external handle, the valve can move up or down, thereby allowing the flow of the fluid. One of the best examples of a globe valve is a water tap, where the device regulates the amount of pressurized water flowing through the spout.
